We're talking about a digital world that in theory isn't constrained by our understanding of physics. But honestly? That's easily one of the worst parts of the original film too! I understand the reasons this aesthetic was chosen, of course: to preserve some visual continuity with the original film. There are four different locales depicted in the film: the arena, the club, Flynn's base and Clu's base, and despite the clear intention to make them all look and feel visually distinct from each other, the monochromatic palette and grid motif rob that effort of the desired effect. It's the bare minimum of what he was expected to do.Īnd yet, while the film's aesthetic is undeniably sharp and fresh, even at 11 years old, I can't recall ever wanting to explore this world beyond what is shown in the film. That Kosinski delivered on the visual front is a bit like singing the mailman's praises for bringing you your phone bill. Whereas for you though, that's the movie's greatest strength, to me I'd say it's its greatest weakness. Well, you're technically right about that last part the actual demo was released in 2008 and is less than 3 minutes long. All parts of the world work in tandem with each other to make something impossible feel tangible. Kosinski has so much attention to detail and commitment to the world. I recommend the animated series, great design there too, and I hope any sequel that materializes again surprises us with a unique look and sfx that push the industry forward. I think it’s effects look way better than many of the films being rushed out today. It’s a sequel that was friendly to new watchers but absolutely kept what worked about the first film and innovated that into something slick and modern for the time it was released. It was also an interesting choice to have a film called ‘Tron’ that didn’t really have ‘Tron’ in it - and boy, was Rinzler a fun villain. The world may not make any scientific sense but the film knows that and just plays it up as a fantasy with a cool,excuse for certain visuals, and it lets itself be one banging music video. It’s practically black and white it’s so monochrome, and I loved that. They trusted that people wouldn’t get tired of this very other look. They never cut back to the real world aside from the beginning and ending and one flashback. I loved the aesthetic like this and how they completely committed to it. I’m really kind of shocked to see a film like this get such a warm reception on this sub, but it is refreshing. I’m very interested to see what the burgeoning sequel ends up being like. This movie is an aesthetic marvel but it’s much more than just a tech demo. The former’s Obi-Wan/Lebowski hybrid is a great departure from the typical mentor personality and the latter’s and unintentionally (but fantastic) off putting visage makes for a really compelling villain. Jeff Bridges comes in with MEGA amounts of charisma as both Flynn and Clu. The story is the most perfunctory part of the film but I still think it’s a notch above your generic Hollywood plot. Every time those drums kick in is absolutely insane. An epic blend of digital and orchestral sounds, it’s so unique and exhilarating.
And there’s not enough praise in the world for Daft Punk’s score. Every sound effect, every item of clothing, every prop looks and feels like it belongs. This is a decade old kids movie shot almost entirely on greenscreen, by all rights it should be some nightmare CGI hellscape but somehow it hasn’t aged a day. The sound and art design are beyond incredible, it’s a multimillion dollar Disney blockbuster and it’s probably most aesthetic driven film I’ve ever seen. How did every kid in the world not become obsessed with Tron in 2010? There’s was a moment during the first big action set piece where I genuinely couldn’t understand how this wasn’t way bigger at the time. Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, Star Wars all seem to be striving for various degrees of realism and it was so refreshing to see a movie like Tron Legacy that is tries its hardest to take you somewhere new. Maybe I’m more tired of the current blockbuster landscape than I realised. I was lucky to see a screening of this at my local IMAX recently and it was such a thrill.
